In 2003, the Gorham Middle School garden was started to serve students with a hands-on, interdisciplinary, service-based learning project. Through indoor and outdoor activities that are tied to the standards, students learn about environmental sustainability, social issues and citizenship. Whether it is taking soil samples and amending it with manure, composting, or troubleshooting pests, students are at the heart of the entire gardening process. They plan, implement, care for and harvest vegetables, herbs, flowers, and berries to donate to the Gorham Food Pantry. On a yearly basis, 1,000+ pounds of fresh produce is donated to our community. With the skillful application of theory learned in class to practice in the garden, our project has prospered for over 20 growing seasons!
